Alu Gal lena Hike

Alu Gal Lena also known as Ash Cave is located at the base of Gombaniya, the tallest peak in the Knuckles Mountain Range. It is an ancient rock shelter believed to have been a Buddhist monestry. This is a strenuous nature trail in Sri Lanka that requires advance preparation and extreme care while hiking.

The 8km out and back hike starts at Thangappuwa and will take 10-12 hours to complete.

  • Obtain permits early, train for steep trails, and prepare for unpredictable Knuckles weather with flexible scheduling and trusted guides.
  • Pack lightweight layers, waterproof jackets, trekking poles, sturdy boots, leech sox, repellent and drybags to protect belongings from rain.
  • Carry high energy snacks, reusable bottles, water purification tablets, and always treat stream water before drinking in remote forest environmnets.
  • Hike in groups, inform contacts, respect forest rules, watch for leeches, avoid risky shortcuts, and always follow guide instructions.
