How do I get to Dumbanagala Chalet from Kandy?

We are located 59km East of Kandy and 17.1KM north of the small town of Hunnasgiriya on the remote Meemure road. You will find the town of Hunnasgiriya on the Kandy -Mahiyangana road- Highway A26.

  • On Google maps, type in, Kandy, Hunnasgiriya, Navanagala, Deenston circuit bungalow, Kobonila, Loolwatta, and Dumbanagala Chalet.
  • Driving time is 1:40. Distance 59KM
  • Drive 39 km on Highway A26 from Kandy towards Mahiyangana. Pass the towns of Digana, Teldeniya, Meda Mahanuwara to get to Hunnasgiriya.
  • Once in Hunnasgiriya, drive to the end of the town where you will find the Petrol shed. You will see the Meemure road on your left in front of the shed.
  • Take that sharp left towards the Meemure road. It is a windy, narrow but carpeted road. Drive 17.1km and you will find the entrance to Dumbanagala on your right.
  • Once you pass the Deenston Forestry Office, you will find a fork on the road. DO NOT TAKE THE ROAD GOING DOWNHILL on to your right. Stay left.
What is the best time to visit Dumbanagala Chalet?

January to May: Beautiful sunny days and pleasant cool evenings.
June to September: Windy season. Sunny days, strong winds, occasional afternoon rain.
October-December: North East Monsoon season.

  • Weather in the Knuckles mountain range is extremely unpredictable and could transform within a few minutes.
  • A thick mist could shroud the mountains and rain could breeze in any minute. Winds can gust at 30-40 miles an hour during windy season
  • The average rainfall at Knuckles range lies between 3000-5000ml while the temperature ranges between 5.5 degrees and 35 degrees Celsius.
  • For reliable hiking conditions choose the dry months of January-May. For atmospheric, dramatic scenery, venture during the wet season.
Do I need a 4 wheel vehicle to get there?

You do not. The Hunnasgiriya -Meemure road is now carpeted and allows easy and comfortable access to the Knuckles Mountain range and all its attractions.

  • Although carpeted, road conditions can become extremely hazardorous due to severe weather conditions.
  • Earth slips, tree fall and other weather related conditions can make driving dangerous. Please check with us about road conditions before starting your journey.
Do you have power at the chalet?

Yes, we do! We are connected to the national electric grid through the Sri Lanka electricity Board.

  • We also have emergency generators to give power supply during interruptions.
Do you have hot water showers?

Yes we do. We have solar powered hot water tanks with electric back up to heat water on rainy days.

What are the restaurants nearby?

The closest restaurant is 17km away in Hunnasgiriya. We are deep in the middle of a wilderness area. Your meal option is to have meals from the inhouse restaurant.

What is your child policy?

Children 4 and under stay free. 2 children per room sharing with parents.
Children 5-11 are charged 50% of the adult charge. 1 child per room.
Children 12 and over are charged as adults.

What is the total number of guests allowed if we book the whole chalet?

The Chalet can accommodate up to 20 adults and four children under the age of 11.

How far is Meemure from the chalet?

The village of Meemure is located 16 km north of the Chalet.
